Connecticut Children’s Names New CEO

Connecticut Children’s has named Shannon Sullivan as its next president and chief executive officer, succeeding Jim Shmerling, who is retiring at the end of 2025.

Sullivan, who is currently president and chief operating officer of Women & Infants Hospital in Rhode Island, will assume her responsibilities Jan. 12, 2026.

Jon Rubin, who chairs the health system’s board of directors, called the appointment “a transformational moment for Connecticut Children’s.”

ā€œShannon’s experience, vision, and values align withĀ our mission, and her leadership will propel us forward as we continue to care for children and families in Connecticut and the region,” Rubin said in an Oct. 7 statement.

Sullivan brings nearly two decades of leadership experience to the role, and is recognized for her innovative, patient-centered approach to healthcare.

ā€œIt is an honor to join Connecticut Children’s at such an extraordinary time in its history,ā€ Sullivan said.

ā€œI am inspired by the organization’s commitment to children and families, and I look forward to working alongside the exceptional team here to advance care, research, innovation and community impact.ā€

Sullivan’s arrival at Connecticut Children’s will coincide with the opening of a new $320 millionĀ clinical tower,Ā designed to expand capacity and integrate advanced technologies.
