The Hartford’s board of directors has chosen company president Morris “Mo” Tooker to succeed Chris Swift as chief executive officer.

Tooker will assume the CEO role March 1, 2027 and will join the insurance giant’s board of directors Oct. 1, 2026.

Swift will become executive board chair after nearly 13 years as CEO, including more than 12 years as chair.

Lead independent director Trevor Fetter credited Swift with turning The Hartford into a more focused and disciplined insurer, more than tripling net income return on equity, and driving a more than eightfold rise in its share price.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to express our deep gratitude for Chris’ leadership,” Fetter said in a Sept. 30 statement.

Swift will become executive board chair after nearly 13 years as CEO.

“He has made a profound impact on The Hartford, the insurance industry, and communities across the country.

“His enduring legacy includes market-leading financial results, a high-performance culture, and a leadership style grounded in empathy and putting people first.”

Swift called Tooker “an outstanding leader, remarkable person, and a trusted industry authority.”

“The strength of our succession planning and depth of talent across the organization gives me the utmost confidence in The Hartford’s bright future,” he said.

Tooker said he was “excited and inspired to lead The Hartford during this time of extraordinary opportunity.”
