A blue-ribbon group commissioned by the legislature is developing a plan to ensure Connecticut’s colleges and universities develop talent ready for the 21st century economy.

Chaired by Judy Resnick, executive director of CBIA’s Education Foundation, the Planning Commission for Higher Education will develop and implement a strategic plan to strengthen the state’s higher education system.

Among other things, the group has pored over data to find out where Connecticut stands comparatively in the U.S. and internationally. They’ve looked at student demographics, retention and degree completion, diversity, and financing available. And they’ve compared the productivity of Connecticut schools with the needs of the state’s economy. “We’re asking, ‘are we on the right track?'” says Resnick.

The group has met in Hartford, Litchfield, and New London and will meet in Norwalk, New Haven, and Middletown in January.

Now, the commission is seeking input from Connecticut’s business and economic development communities as it moves toward developing recommendations for the legislature later this year.
