OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standard covers all employers with employees who could be reasonably anticipated, as a result of performing their job duties, to face contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials such as bodily fluids, tissues, and cell or tissue cultures.
Among other things, the standard requires employers to identify, in writing, tasks and procedures as well as job classifications where occupational exposure to these materials occurs–without regard to personal protective clothing and equipment.
It also requires employers to take universal precautions to protect employees from occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials and to implement procedures for exposure incidents (including follow-up).
