Gov. Ned Lamont announced a special election to fill a vacancy for state representative in the 25th House District.

Voters in parts of New Britain will head to the polls Tuesday, Jan. 6.

The seat became vacant Nov. 12 following the resignation of Bobby Sanchez, who was elected mayor of New Britain.

Sanchez defeated Republican Alderwoman Sharon Beloin-Saavedra for the mayor seat, succeeding three-term Republican Erin Stewart.

Stewart has since announced a campaign for governor.

Sanchez was first elected to the General Assembly in 2011, representing the 25th District for more than a decade.

At that time he ran unopposed during a special election.
