FuelCell Energy is growing its manufacturing footprint in Connecticut as it looks to meet demand for powering data centers.

The Danbury-based company announced it is ramping up expansion of its Torrington facility by increasing production capacity to support an annualized output of up to 500 megawatts—well above earlier expectations.

Company leaders say the expansion will help position the business to scale production of its standardized power solutions and support future growth.

“This past quarter reflected strong commercial momentum and disciplined operational execution across the business, including continued progress on our data center strategy,” FuelCell Energy president and CEO Jason Few said.

FuelCell Energy was recognized by Time Magazine June 9 as one of the World’s Top GreenTech Companies of 2026, ranked 57th on this year’s list.

Data Center Growth Strategy

During the second quarter, the company announced the introduction of a standardized 12.5-megawatt energy block to shorten time-to-power for AI and data centers.

Few emphasized the company’s ability to deliver scalable, on-site power solutions that bypass traditional grid limitations.

“In effect, we are focused on extending the grid to the data center, enabling customers to accelerate time-to-power, reducing dependence on constrained transmission infrastructure, removing permitting friction, and supporting the growing energy demands of AI-driven compute environments with proven, scalable technology,” he said.

FuelCell Energy is making targeted investments at its Torrington facility.

Few said construction is already underway and will take place over the next two years.

It began with the commissioning of a new conditioning room and crews are in the process of installing a new high-volume tape caster.

FuelCell estimates the expansion will range from $200 million to $275 million.
