CDC Recommends Updated COVID-19 Vaccine

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that people six months and older get an updated COVID-19 vaccine. 

The recommendation comes after the Food and Drug Administration this week approved updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. 

The new vaccines target the omicron XBB.1.5 variant.

CDC officials said people who have not had a COVID-19 shot in the past two months should get the vaccine to protect themselves in the coming months. 

“We have more tools than ever to prevent the worst outcomes from COVID-19,” said CDC director Dr. Mandy Cohen.

Virus Protections

This is the first fall and winter virus season where vaccines are available for the three viruses responsible for most hospitalizations—COVID-19, RSV, and the flu. 

CDC officials said it is safe to get the COVID-19 and flu vaccines at the same time. 

The COVID-19 shots will likely be available at large pharmacies throughout the country later this week and should come at no cost to most Americans through the end of the year. 

Many are covered through private insurers. A new federal program covers the costs for most uninsured people.
