National Small Business Safety Manual Updated
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Occupational Safety and Health Administration has updated the Small Business Safety and Health Handbook with checklists for emerging safety and health topics.
The handbook outlines steps employers should take and resources to help employers implement safety programs.
The additional topics focus on safety related to infection control, ergonomics, workplace violence, and young workers.
In 2019, NIOSH began working with the OSHA to update the handbook.
The handbook includes information on the benefits of an effective safety and health program, contains self-inspection checklists for employers to identify workplace hazards, and provides key workplace safety and health resources for small businesses.
In 2022, officials with NIOSH and OSHA added a heat-related illness prevention checklist.
The handbook can be an effective starter of a safety program for a small business or ‘check-up for a current program, though it should not be used as a compliance manual as it does not offer legal interpretations.
