Five Connecticut companies are receiving U.S. Department of Energy grants to help improve energy efficiency, lower costs, increase productivity, and reduce industrial emissions.

The $14.8 million funding is part of the Industrial Training and Assessment Centers Implementation Grants program.

The funding supports small and medium-sized manufacturers nationwide to implement energy efficiency projects.

The projects include installing onsite solar, improving lightning and heating, and electrifying fleets.

More than $2 million of the federal funding will be coming to Connecticut companies, including CBIA members Beacon Industries, Inc., Talalay Global, and Gilman Brothers Company.

Projects

The projects include:

  • Beacon Industries Inc. in Newington—$899,211 to update compressed air system, boiler, and LED lighting, install equipment, and replace windows
  • Talalay Global in Shelton—$469,626 to repair compressed air system, implement steam system and chiller plant optimization, install step-down transformers, install new rooftop units, and heat pumps, and upgrade process motors
  • Gilman Brothers Company in Gilman—$353,800 to install a rooftop photovoltaic system, retrofit LED lighting controls, and install a high-efficiency rooftop unit
  • Town of Glastonbury WPCF—$350,000 to eliminate final effluent/storm discharge pump backflow, and implement aeration system optimization
  • Urban Mining CT LLC in Beacon Falls—$300,000 to install comprehensive production throughput improvements, including materials handling equipment

The ITAC Implementation Grants program is funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and administered by DOE’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains.

Reducing Costs, Emissions

The goal is to help small businesses lower their energy costs, improve efficiency, and reduce emissions.

The $14.8 million federal investment in the program also leverages an additional $33.2 million from industry to support the projects.

DOE officials say the grants will help businesses abate more than 33,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The Department of Energy said the grants will help businesses abate more than 33,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year nationwide.

That’s the equivalent of about 11 small businesses’ annual emissions.

Since launching the implementation grant program in 2022, 219 businesses across 38 states have been selected to receive a combined total of more than $40 million through the ITAC program, matched by more than $83 million in industry investment.
