Hundreds of thousands of federal dollars are going to two Connecticut small businesses for research and development efforts.

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards awarded 3D Array Technology LLC and Solution Spray Technologies LLC funding through the Technology Small Business Innovation Research Program.

Across the country, NIST awarded 23 businesses more than $7 million through two separate efforts.

The first allows awardees to conduct research and development to advance technologies in response to the coronavirus.

After successfully completing phase one projects, awardees are eligible to receive an additional round of funding to continue their efforts.

Technology Advancements

NIST awarded 3D Array Technology LLC of Storrs $800,000 to develop a new type of nanostructure array of integrated microfibers to enable medical masks with high filtration efficiency, low breathing resistance, and good antimicrobial capabilities.

The other NIST award also went to a Storrs-based company.

NIST awarded Solution Spray Technologies $100,000 for based coat manufacturing.

The company is creating a system that can measure the thickness of coatings on small objects with complex geometries by using lasers to generate ultrasound waves on the coatings.
