CBIA Response to June 2026 Employment Report 

The state’s largest business organization issued the following response to today’s release of the June 2026 employment report.  

“While June’s job gains are encouraging, this report highlights ongoing concerning trends for Connecticut’s labor market,” said CBIA president and CEO Chris DiPentima.  

“Several key industries posted strong job gains over the past 12 months, including manufacturing—a critical economic sector—along with construction, education, and other services.  

“While it’s important to recognize and celebrate this growth, there are a number of warning signs that cannot be ignored.  

“Connecticut’s unemployment rate is now 5.2%—a full percentage point higher than the national average.  

“At the same time, the labor force—those working and actively looking for work—shrank by 11,300 people in May and is now down by 46,900 people year over year. 

“To put that in perspective, that’s equivalent to losing the entire population of Enfield. 

“It’s also important to note that the total number of employed Connecticut residents fell by 69,600, or 3.7%, over the past year. 

“That figure includes nonfarm payrolls, farm workers, independent contractors, and the self-employed. 

“Taken together, these numbers underscore the long-term demographic and workforce challenges facing Connecticut.  

“As more experienced workers retire, there are not enough younger workers entering the labor market to replace them.  

“Combined with slower population growth and reduced immigration, those trends are creating increased pressure on the state’s workforce and overall economy.” 

“If Connecticut hopes to capitalize on its economic opportunities and address its workforce challenges, creating a more affordable and attractive environment for families and workers is essential. 

“That’s how we grow our workforce, attract new talent, and support long-term economic growth and opportunity for all residents.”
