The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program awards federal dollars to small, innovative companies (500 employees or fewer) to solve problems identified by 11 federal agencies.

The SBIR program is competitive and awards funds in two phases. Phase I is a proof of concept award, typically up to $150,000. Phase II is usually a prototype development award, typically up to $1 million. Collaborations with academic and industrial organizations are encouraged. Connecticut state matching grants and loans are also available
