Connecticut secured a new round of federal funding to bring high-speed internet to more homes and businesses.

Gov. Ned Lamont and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Katie Dykes announced the federal government awarded $144 million to the state for its Broadband Equity Access, and Deployment proposal.

“Access to fast, affordable, reliable high-speed internet is a requirement of life today, whether it be getting medical care, paying bills, or finding work and educational opportunities,” Lamont said.

Connecticut is one of 18 states that received approval.

The proposal focuses on closing remaining gaps in high-speed internet access, specifically improving local networks, and supporting schools and hospitals.

Connecticut’s Progress

In recent years, the state has made significant gains in expanding broadband access across the state.

In 2022, the Federal Communications Commission identified an estimated 15,758 unserved and underserved broadband serviceable locations in Connecticut.

Collective efforts across Connecticut helped cut that number down to just 717 broadband serviceable locations.

Connecticut’s latest BEAD proposal prioritizes connecting those remaining eligible locations, while also shifting a focus to connecting critical organizations, like schools, libraries, and health facilities.

“We are well positioned in broadband connectivity in Connecticut because of significant investment made by industry in our state,” CBIA senior policy director Pete Myers said.

“The business community is committed to working with state partners, like DEEP, to deliver high quality affordable broadband to every corner of the state.”

Beyond infrastructure, the proposal includes plans for digital adoption, skills training, and workforce development.
