Aetna Inc. is investing $1.2 million over the next five years to expand its workforce development initiative in Connecticut.

The Hartford-based health insurer launched the NextStep at Aetna program June 16.

The initiative is designed to expand access to career pathways through academic programs, skills training, career development, and workforce readiness efforts across Connecticut.

Aetna expects to provide approximately 76,000 hours of training over the next three years.

The CVS Health subsidiary said the program aims to boost local talent pipelines for both college graduates and individuals without a college degree.

Creating Opportunities

A key component of the initiative is a new training facility at Aetna’s Hartford headquarters.

The facility will prepare entry-level talent for careers in customer service and operations.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for all.”

The program is open to candidates with a high school diploma or higher.

“As a company deeply rooted in Hartford for over 170 years, we aim to contribute to a vibrant talent pipeline and a thriving community,” said Aetna executive vice president and COO Katerina Guerraz.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for all and supporting the success of Connecticut’s workforce.”

Academic Initiatives

Through NextStep, Aetna said it is deepening its collaboration with Hartford-area academic institutions. Initiatives include:

  • Expanding career development programs for students at UConn’s Hartford campus
  • Enhancing and sponsoring career readiness programming at the University of Hartford
  • Designing curriculum for students in Hartford Public Schools Allied Health Pathways program

Aetna said it will continue offering seven full-time leadership development programs that provide emerging leaders with real-world experience.

“Aetna is helping ensure that residents have access to meaningful careers and employers have access to the skilled talent they need.”

The investment comes as Connecticut employers continue to navigate a tight labor market and persistent workforce gaps.

“By expanding pathways for both degree‑holders and individuals entering the workforce without a college credential, Aetna is helping ensure that residents have access to meaningful careers and employers have access to the skilled talent they need to thrive,” said Connecticut chief workforce officer Kelli-Marie Vallieres.

“Their commitment to developing local talent—through education partnerships, training and clear career ladders—exemplifies the coordinated, statewide approach necessary to grow Connecticut’s economy and support opportunity for all.”
