Tweed-New Haven Airport announced the addition of a second commercial carrier Aug. 13.

Breeze Airways will begin offering flights from Tweed in December, with nonstop flights to 10 destinations available by early spring.

“We anticipate really strong demand out of there,” said Lukas Johnson, Breeze’s chief commercial officer. “From day one our playbook has included significant growth across the Northeast.”

Based in Salt Lake City, Breeze currently operates from Bradley International, Westchester County Airport, and airports in Providence, RI; Manchester and Portsmouth, NH; Burlington, VT; Portland, ME; and Newburgh, Islip, and Plattsburgh, NY.

The announcement comes as Avport, which operates Tweed, and local officials continue efforts to expand options for the region’s residents.

Last December, the Federal Aviation Administration approved plans to modernize Tweed, including lengthening the runway and constructing a modern, environmentally friendly terminal.

Expansion Efforts

Since bringing commercial flights back in 2021 with Avelo Airlines, the airport has supported millions of flights and more than 300 jobs.

“Improvements at HVN in recent years have grown jobs and increased convenience for flyers, and the addition of Breeze will only further the incredible forward progress and growth we’ve seen in recent years,” Avports CEO Jorge Roberts said.

CBIA president and CEO Chris DiPentima said the expansion efforts will help grow the economy.

“The ability to around our state and move in and out of our state is what attracts businesses.”

“This is what businesses and their workforces have demanded for so many years in Connecticut,” said DiPentima.

“The ability to move around our state and the ability to move in and out of our state is what attracts businesses to the state, it’s what attracts individuals to the state.”

Avelo, which recently expanded to Bradley, also announced new service this week to New Orleans and expanded service to Puerto Rico.

Tweed is Avelo’s largest base, with 26 nonstop destinations and a workforce of more than 250 people.

Flight Path

The engines powering Breeze Airway flights are made in Connecticut.

Breeze will use Airbus A220s, which are powered by Pratt & Whitney’s PZ1500G geared turbofan engines.

In addition to being much quieter than typical commercial engines, the PZ1500G engine burns less fuel.

Breeze will begin service at Tweed in December, with flights to Fort Myers, West Palm Beach, Orlando, and Vero Beach.

In February, the airline will add additional flights to Charlestown, Jacksonville, Norfolk, Richmond, Raleigh, and Sarasota.

The shorelines positive response to the Avelo flights has been noticed by other airlines, Breeze being the first to add flights to Tweed. For so long, Bradley field syphoned metro New Haven passengers but now that has changed and Bradley’s numbers have dropped.
