Makerspace Pilot Program Wins Senate Passage

The state Senate passed legislation May 15 establishing a pilot program that provides financial assistance to entities that establish a makerspace program
SB 1179 defines makerspace as a community space that provides entrepreneurs access to tools, technology, production means, educational opportunities, and workforce development and training.Â
The bill originated in the Commerce Committee and was introduced by a bipartisan group of legislators, including Sen. Julie Kushner (D-Danbury) and Sen. Tony Hwang (R-Fairfield).
The program also directs $1 million in funding from the Manufacturing Innovation Fund, as existing makerspace programs are significantly geared towards advanced manufacturing workforce development and training.Â
Entities interested in establishing a makerspace program or expanding an existing makerspace program can apply for financial assistance by submitting an application highlighting program details to the Department of Economic and Community Development.
Manufacturing Growth
The legislation comes at a time when Connecticut’s manufacturing industry has seen significant growth, expanding by $3 billion since 2022, or by 9% in the last three years.
SB 1179 addresses industry needs, notably workforce development and public awareness about career opportunities in advanced manufacturing.
The bill presents a great public-private partnership opportunity for several existing makerspace programs looking to expand and provide opportunities for more aspiring entrepreneurs, and for new programs to develop in different municipalities.
