Stamford Transportation Center Garage Opens
State and local officials opened the long-awaited, $100 million Stamford Transportation Center parking garage Feb. 26.
The 914-space parking garage is attached directly to the transportation center via a 320-foot pedestrian garage, with direct access to the train station’s Track 5 platform.
Gov. Ned Lamont called the transportation center, used by more than 28,000 commuters daily, “the gateway to New England.”
“This is people’s first impressions of our amazing state,” he said. “And the train station’s OK. I think it was designed by a Soviet architect who forgot his glasses myself, but it’s time for a redo, it’s time for an upgrade.”
The state funded the million project through bond funding administered by the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
Future Plans
The new garage includes 92 electric vehicle charging stations, 120 bicycle spaces, and 50 e-bike charging stations.
The project also includes efforts to make the intersection of South State Street and Washington Boulevard safer with new sidewalks, traffic signals, and thermal crosswalks.
“The new parking garage ensures that commuters, no matter if they are driving, walking, or biking, have convenient, safe access to the Stamford Transportation Center,” said Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto.
Lamont and Eucalitto also announced the release of the Stamford Transportation Center Master Plan, which includes a vision for future improvements to Connecticut’s busiest public transportation hub.
Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons added that “transforming the Stamford train station into a world-class transit hub is a key priority for my administration.”
“Improving access to public transportation in Stamford will help keep the city’s and Lower Fairfield County’s positive economic momentum moving,” said CBIA’s Chris Davis.
“As this region of our state continues to grow, these types of improvements will help area employers attract and retain a workforce that will help unlock Connecticut’s true economic potential.”
