GE Appliances Opens Microfactory in Stamford

Production started this week inside GE Appliances’ CoCREATE microfactory in Stamford. 

The 67,000 square-foot microfactory is the first completed phase of CoCREATE Stamford.

The creation center represents GE Appliances’ investment in manufacturing and workforce development in Connecticut.

“We’re thrilled to be building appliances in the northeast while also providing local students with opportunities to work with us and learn,” GE Appliances president and CEO Kevin Nolan said. 

“Manufacturing is our foundation, but our factory is only the start of what’s to come here. 

“We’re energized about the possibilities ahead when CoCREATE Stamford fully opens to the community and look forward to bringing people together to innovate, educate, and inspire.”

GE Appliances first announced the plans for CoCREATE Stamford in September of 2021. 

In addition to its manufacturing floor, the center will also feature a collaborative makerspace for the community. 

Workforce Development 

GE Appliances has also partnered with the University of Connecticut and Connecticut State Colleges and Universities to hire local college students for part-time employment within the factory. 

It will give students the opportunity to work alongside GE engineers in a state-of-the-art facility.

“University partnerships are critical to growing the manufacturing workforce in Connecticut,” CBIA president and CEO Chris DiPentima said. 

“It will not only give students hands-on learning opportunities, but should excite them about the modern manufacturing world.”

Stamford mayor Caroline Simmons said the city is thrilled to welcome the company to the neighborhood. 

“CoCREATE Stamford is an innovative model that not only brings economic growth and jobs to our city, but most importantly aligns workforce development and educational opportunities for students interested in the fields of engineering and manufacturing,” Simmons said. 

“We need to ensure we prepare the next generation for job opportunities in these critical sectors, and CoCREATE is doing just that.”

GE Appliances expects the full facility will be complete by the start of 2023.
