Connecticut’s slow recovery from the economic havoc created by the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the critical importance of the 2020 General Assembly elections, the stateโ€™s largest business organization said today.

Employers added 17,000 jobs to payrolls in November as the pace of job recovery slowed for a second month. Connecticut has now recovered 61% of the historic 291,300 jobs lost in March and April.

Seven of the stateโ€™s 10 major industry sectors added jobs last month, led by leisure and hospitality, which added 6,900 positions and has now regained two-thirds of the jobs lost earlier this year.

โ€œWhile thereโ€™s a lot of attention on the U.S. presidential election, we cannot ignore how important the state legislative elections are to rebuilding Connecticutโ€™s economy,โ€ said Eric Gjede, CBIAโ€™s vice president of government affairs.

โ€œWe urge voters to do their homework and engage with their local candidates and help get people back working.

โ€œTake the time to understand candidatesโ€™ policy positions and their support for policies that will help employersโ€”particularly hard hit small businessesโ€”navigate COVID-19 restrictions and lead the stateโ€™s recovery.

โ€œConnecticut needs lawmakers who are focused on supporting our economic recovery, creating a positive climate for job growth and investment, and capitalizing on the stateโ€™s many strengths to bring opportunity to all residents.โ€

Gjede said CBIAโ€™s website has a wealth of state General Assembly candidate information and resources, including legislative voting records and policy recommendations.

CBIA is Connecticutโ€™s largest business organization, with thousands of member companies, small and large, representing a diverse range of industries from every part of the state. For more information, please contact Joe Budd (860.244.1951).
