World Affairs Councils are a group of 86 non-profit, non-partisan organizations open to all who wish to join. The World Affairs Council system has 484,000 participants and 28 affiliated organizations. It reaches over 20 million people each year through its 2,500 events, radio, TV, and school programs.
Councils offer international exchanges, school programs, teachers workshops, foreign policy discussions, national opinion polling, travel programs, journals, newspaper columns, and local radio and television programs.
The national office organizes an annual conference, leadership missions overseas, a national speaker referral system, international speaker exchanges, people-to-people diplomacy missions, educational workshops, book tours, subscription discounts, operations workshops and papers, and a variety of national publications. It also runs nationwide program series such as Congressional Town Meetings, World Bank Town Meetings, State Department Town meetings, and series focusing on specific issues and regions of the world.

The U.S. DOC is the leading federal government agency for export promotion
assistance to small- and medium-sized firms. The DOC provides a variety
of export promotion programs and services, and has offices in 67 U.S.
cities and 75 foreign countries. The Export Assistance Center provides
one-on-one counseling to firms and provides a variety of Commerce Department

This agency provides support for facilitating exports, offers export credits, and guarantees and offers direct credit to borrowers outside the United States. Through the Foreign Credit Insurance Association, Eximbank provides credit protection for U.S. exporters. These policies insure repayment in the event of default by a foreign buyer and may be used as collateral for bank loans. The agency also guarantees repayment to commercial banks that provide financing to exporters covering service contracts, leases and other special situations.

It represents the United States at meetings of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and in negotiations with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The office publishes annually the National Trade Estimates Report on Foreign Trade Barriers, listing major barriers U.S. companies may find in exporting goods and services to various countries.

OPIC encourages U.S. private investment in developing countries by providing political risk insurance and finance services. Its insurance provides protection against the risks of inconvertibility of local currency, expropriation or nationalization, and losses resulting from war, revolution, insurrection or civil strife. Finance services include direct loans of up to $6 million to smaller businesses and loan guarantees of up to $50 million. Programs are available for new projects or expansion of existing facilities. OPIC operates its programs in more than 90 developing countries.

The department provides export guarantees to foreign buyers through the Commodity Credit Corporation. Its Foreign Agricultural Service gathers worldwide information in export data to support trade and works to reduce trade barriers. The Office of International Cooperation and Development is responsible for international technical cooperation for development assistance programs. It also acts as a liaison between U.S. companies and foreign buyers through the Agricultural Information and Marketing Service. The Trade Lead Service finds sales opportunities with foreign companies and governments and relays them to the U.S. exporter and the Buyer Alert Program forwards your sales announcements to interest buyers overseas. You do not have to make an agricultural product to make use of these services.

The effort to unite the economies of the Western Hemisphere into a single free trade agreement began at the Summit of the Americas, which was held in December, 1994 in Miami. The Heads of State and Government of the 34 democracies in the region agreed to construct a Free Trade Area of the Americas, or FTAA, in which barriers to trade and investment will be progressively eliminated, and to complete negotiations for the agreement by 2005. The leaders also committed to achieve substantial progress toward building the FTAA by 2000.
