CBIA Response to June 2024 Employment Report

The state’s largest business organization issued the following response to today’s release of the June 2024 employment report. 

“It’s heartening to see Connecticut’s economic momentum continue,” said CBIA president and CEO Chris DiPentima. 

“With 3,300 jobs added in June, we have now seen six consecutive months of job growth, with big gains in education and health services, the government sector, and leisure and hospitality.

“Those gains helped to offset losses in professional services and other services.

“It’s notable that the state’s labor force—those working and those actively looking for work—declined for the first time this year (-1,100).

“Our year-over-year job growth (0.7%) still trails the U.S. (1.7%) and some of our neighbors in the Northeast like New Hampshire (1.6%) and Rhode Island (1.1%).

“We must embrace solutions that will connect the more than 74,000 people looking for work with the state’s 90,000 job openings.

“As we are reminded by CNBC’s just-released America’s Top States for Business rankings, Connecticut’s high cost of living, and high cost of doing business hamper us from growing the population and unlocking our state’s full economic potential. 

“It’s critical that policymakers in Connecticut keep their focus on maintaining and accelerating this pace of job growth, lowering the cost of living, and making Connecticut a more affordable and attractive place to do business—solutions such as those in CBIA’s 2024 Transform Connecticut policy priorities.”
