Travelers Championship Part of Elite PGA Tour Tier

The Travelers Championship has long been considered one of the PGA Tour events by both players and fans.

That tradition will continue for years to come.

The PGA Tour and the Travelers Championship announced July 27 that the Cromwell tournament will be part of the new PGA TOUR Championship Series beginning in 2028.

“This has been an extremely successful tournament by every metric,” PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said.

“Our members love it. Travelers is an amazing partner. They do a lot of things that we’re looking for in a Championship Series event.”

Championship Series

The Travelers Championship, a Signature Event for the past three years, is the first announced for the tour’s overhauled schedule.

The schedule will divide competition into two tiers: the Championship Series and the Challenger Series.

The Championship Series will feature golf’s biggest stars competing throughout the season, including the four majors, postseason events, and team competitions such as the Ryder Cup.

The PGA Tour will announce the full 2028 schedule at a later date.

“Our goal every year is for the Travelers Championship to be one of the best tournaments on the PGA Tour,” said Travelers executive vice president and chief administrative officer Andy Bessette.

“Being part of the upcoming PGA Tour Championship Series is validation of the collective effort that Travelers, the tournament team, fans and volunteers have invested over the past two decades.”

USA Today named the tournament “Best Golf Tournament for Fans” earlier this year and Newsweek‘s Fans Choice Awards named it “Best PGA Tour Tournament Event” in 2025.

The announcement follows a milestone year for the tournament.

The 2026 Travelers Championship marked 20 years with Travelers as title sponsor.

In that time, the tournament has generated more than $40 million for more than 1,000 charities.

In 2026 alone, the tournament generated a record $5 million for more than 270 charities.
