The state’s largest business organization issued the following response to today’s release of the January 2022 employment report.

“This is a disappointing start to the year, particularly given the number of private sector job losses, and further emphasizes how critical it is for policymakers to prioritize job growth,” CBIA president and CEO Chris DiPentima said today.

“January breaks a streak of nine consecutive months of job growth, highlighting the fragility of our pandemic recovery and the multiple challenges we face.

“Connecticut’s now recovered just 78% of the historic 289,400 jobs lost to COVID-19 shutdowns and restrictions and continues to trail most of the region and the country.

Our labor shortage is a full-blown crisis—we have 110,000 job openings, yet our labor force losses since the beginning of the pandemic represent an astonishing 10% of the national decline.

“The time for lawmakers to focus is now. I cannot emphasize enough the size and scope of this issue and the potentially disastrous consequences if we fail to act.”

CBIA is Connecticut’s largest business organization, with thousands of member companies, small and large, representing a diverse range of industries from every part of the state. For more information, please contact Ali Warshavsky (860.244.1929).
